Simon Atack, one of the world’s foremost military aviation and naval artists, has graciously and generously permitted a special reproduction of his painting, Hopgood’s Courageous Run to form the design of our new Pub Sign.

We thought it appropriate to make this new sign in recognition of and to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of OPERATION CHASTISE.

Of his approach to his work, Simon has written;

‘I want to respectfully honour the memories of good and courageous young people, regardless of their flag of nationality, and the aircraft in which they performed their duty, sacrificed their lives and won a better tomorrow for all of us.’

All of us at the Dambusters Inn feel deeply honoured to have this fine work of art displayed for all to see and enjoy . . . and remember.

THE COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE AWARDS 2019 ( the Rural Oscars ) — the story:

In late 2018, ‘Nominations’ were sent to The Countryside Alliance by many of our customers.

Our customers wrote their recommendations, completed Nomination Forms and submitted them to the Countryside Alliance ‘Rural Oscars’ Campaign.

In January 2019, the Regional Finalists were announced — throughout the eight regions, only thirty–three pubs had reached this ‘Finalist’ stage — and only four of those pubs are in the East of England Region — one of them being the Dambusters Inn.

During March–April 2019, Judges from the Countryside Alliance Awards Campaign visited all of the
thirty–three Finalist Pubs for evaluation.

On 05th April 2019, the Judge visited the Dambusters Inn where Greg Algar (Director) and Steve Plews (Manager) were interviewed.

On 10th May 2019, the Regional Winner in the East of England Pub Category was published on the Campaign website — the Dambusters Inn had won the East of England title.

On 11th May 2019, in the post — arrived the official invitation . . . “from The Lord Mancroft requesting the pleasure of the company of Mr. Greg Algar and Mr. Steve Plews at a reception to celebrate the winners of the Countryside Alliance Awards in the Cholmondeley Room, House of Lords, London, on behalf of the Countryside Alliance in association with Farmers Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, on Wednesday 19 June 2019.”

Building Development Project

“Since before the Norman conquest Scampton Church has, through the ages, been the place where local people have gathered.
Once again, we want our church to be the place where local people come to, meet and socialise, to be entertained, and for help when they need it.”

The Building Development Project is an ambitious scheme to reorder the village church in Scampton.

The scheme will create a ‘Community Hub’ a place and a space where the hundreds of visitors to the area each year can be better served when they visit the church and its churchyard wherein the Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains a reserved part of the grounds.

Already, much essential maintenance to the fabric of the church and improvement to the facilities has been accomplished.

Quite naturally, any help that you can offer to support this exciting programme will be very welcome.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission . . .: . . . honours the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars, and ensures they will never be forgotten.; WELCOME TO SCAMPTON (ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST) CHURCHYARD; Every year, Scampton Church welcomes hundreds of visitors.; The Churchyard contains sixty-four Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and eight German war graves.; During the Second World War there was a Royal Air Force Station at Scampton, and in the early months of the war a plot lying to the right of the entrance was set aside for the burial of servicemen. In 1941 it became necessary to reserve further ground for this purpose and a plot in an extension of the churchyard north of the church was used.; The Commission’s objective is to make sure that the sites – from individual scattered graves to iconic cemeteries and memorials – are visited and explored as a permanent part of local heritage.; The Commission actively engages new audiences and finds innovative ways to involve the whole community with its work – through education and outreach, voluntary activity, arts and heritage projects, local research and partnership working. The Commission aims to increase local awareness of Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) sites, particularly in the UK.; Rising to the challenge of this work, a research project by members of Scampton Church intends to map and document as much personal information as can be discovered, relating to each of the service personnel buried here.; If you would like to help us in any way with this fine project then please contact us.; and . . .
